Mapping Knowledge

Mapping Knowledge centres around the use of thread arcs and arc diagram representation in the mapping of art movements and the people or groups of people involved in them.

Spanning 200 years of art history, primarily focusing on the conception and influence of American conceptual art, the graphic aims to show temporal, geographical, cultural and intellectual relationships between people and movements.

The data is sorted chronologically, beginning with Realism and ending on Generative Art.

Larger arcs in the graphic (e.g. Surrealism -> New Leipzig School) denote further temporal and cultural distance between entries. They also demonstrate larger cross-cultural influences.

Data entries where numerous arcs converge (e.g. Marcel Duchamp, John Cage, Conceptualism) indicate highly influential movements and people. In addition to describing influence, they also indicate points of controversy and innovation.
